Protect AllStar operation from an already-active repeater.
MABEL was developed around a specific Yaesu repeater problem: if the repeater was already transmitting in another format and the AllStar side attempted to key it at the same time, the resulting mode conflict could cause the repeater to lock up. MABEL prevents that collision by checking the repeater's actual transmitted RF state before it allows the AllStar PTT request to key the transmitter.
The DR-1X/DR-2X can remain configured for AUTO-AUTO operation. MABEL intercepts the normal AllStar CTCSS and PTT control paths, watches the receive-side CTCSS condition and the AllStar PTT request, and then checks the RF Detector input before commanding the repeater into FM operation. If RF is already present, MABEL inhibits the AllStar keying request until the repeater is clear.
How MABEL manages the AllStar control path
Compatible SC-series CTCSS decoder output and the USB radio adapter PTT request are routed through MABEL instead of going directly to their normal destinations. MABEL then produces gated substitute CTCSS and PTT signals after its RF-state and mode checks are satisfied. AllStar continues doing its normal repeater-controller and linking work while MABEL handles the Yaesu mode-control interlock around it.
| Primary application | Yaesu DR-1X / DR-2X AllStar repeater integration |
| Network use | AllStar / HamVOIP |
| Conflict protection | Checks actual transmitter RF before allowing AllStar keying |
| RF sensing | External Custom Communications RF Detector supported |
| Normal repeater mode | AUTO-AUTO operation retained |
| AllStar software | No special AllStar program modification required by the MABEL interlock method |
| Repeater modification | No internal RF-active tap required when the external RF Detector is used |
| Configuration | Kit or assembled |
DR-1X and DR-2X wiring difference
- DR-1X: jumper repeater pins 10 and 11; repeater pin 12 connects to MABEL X3-3.
- DR-2X: jumper repeater pins 10 and 12; repeater pin 11 connects to MABEL X3-3.
When an SC-50 is used, do not ground MABEL X3-4. Ground X3-4 only when the installation is not using an SC-50.
Optional site-control capability
The MABEL design also provides a header for an optional eight-relay control module. That allows the Raspberry Pi to control auxiliary site equipment or low-voltage control circuits through GPIO-driven relay outputs. The documented relay arrangement also allows the relay coils to use a separate 5 V supply so their current does not have to be carried by the Raspberry Pi's 5 V rail.
Supporting hardware from Masters Communications
A complete MABEL installation uses additional interface hardware sold separately by Masters Communications, including compatible RA-series USB radio adapter and SC-series squelch/CTCSS hardware. These boards are not included with MABEL.
